Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is over abused. Don’t you think that it should die? For most Search Engine Optimization companies and professionals, SEO is still all about Article Submissions, Directory Submissions, Press Releases, Link Exchanges, Reciprocal Links, Sitewide Blogroll Links, Guest Posts etc.

Some of the above mentioned link building tactics may still work but they all are surely dying. Don’t trust me? Check out the keyword interests of Article Submission, Directory Submission, Press Releases, Link Exchange, and Reciprocal Link over time based on Google Trends data.

That’s not all! There’s Google Panda, Google Penguin, Google Exact Match Domain (EMD) Update, DMCA Penalty, Google Disavow Tool, Unnatural Links Penalty, Page Layout Algorithm Update, Use of Social Signals, Instant Search, Author Rank etc. all these changed the way Google ranks webpages. And what does it mean? It simply means that there’s more challenge for webmasters. Now what’s interesting about these updates is that it makes SEO more simple as all these updates aim to reward high quality websites.

Okay, so SEO won’t die but don’t you think that it must evolve into something else? I feel that it must be called “Website Optimization” than just Search Engine Optimization. And Website Optimization should be all about Improving User Experience, Conversions, Technical Website Audits, Navigation, Market Research etc.

After all we create websites for users and not for search engines though it’s search engines that drive people to our websites.

That said, search engines are getting smarter day by day and are trying to think like humans. Therefore, while building websites our goal should be to create webpages that people want to trust, bookmark, blog and share so that eventually those webpages will rank higher on search engines naturally.

As long as you make your website original and useful for your readers you shouldn’t be worrying about another Google update. Give your readers what they want as it’s users and not search engines who are going to ‘use’ the information or buy the products on your website.
