How do you figure out why your traffic dropped or spiked suddenly? The options are… you ask industry experts, or monitor webmaster forums like Digital Point, WebmasterWorld, Google Webmaster Central Forum, or use tools like MozCast (Google weather report), SERPmetrics (SERP fluctuations), or check updates on official Google Webmaster Blog or Twitter, or check Matt Cutt’s blog or Twitter, or check Manual Webspam Actions in Google Webmaster Tools.

If there is a sudden change in organic search traffic then it’s more likely that Google pushed an update to its algorithm.

Google Penalty Checker Tools

Now here are 3 SEO Tools that helps you visualize various Google Algorithmic Updates on your Google Analytics chart. These SEO Tools simply overlay your Google Analytics Charts with data like – Google Algorithmic Updates, Public Data, etc.

Chartelligence

Chartelligence

Chartelligence is a browser plugin that helps you correlate charts trends with important business events. It’s currently available as a Google Chrome Extension. Once you install the extension you’ll see the Chartelligence Icon when you check your Google Analytics charts.

Chartelligence

You can click the icon and select a layer – from Google, Holidays, Economic, TV, Website – to see how your website’s traffic correlates with Google Algorithmic Updates like Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, Phantom, EMD, etc. or other data like U.S. Holidays, Economic Data, etc.

You can also choose custom dates and can create private layers. So you’ll exactly know how a Google algorithm has impacted your website’s traffic.

Panguin Tool

Panguin Tool

Panguin Tool is another free SEO tool to see how various Google Algorithmic Updates impacted your website’s traffic. It’s more powerful than Chartelligence as it allows you to – Select Custom Dates, Compare Landing Page & Keyword Variance, and also has a Data Filter to include and exclude landing pages or keywords.

Go to Panguin Tool, login with your Google account (it uses oAuth so you don’t have to enter your Google account password), select a website’s profile to see the graphs.

You can disconnect the app by revoking its permission to access your Google Analytics account at Google Account Permission Settings. Select “Barracuda Digital” from the list and click “Revoke access”.

Fruition’s Google Penalty Checker Tool

Fruition Google Penalty Checker Tool

Fruition’s Google Penalty Checker Tool allows you to find out which Google Algorithmic Update impacted your website in less than two minutes. They have a free version (for up to two domains) and a paid version ($48/month for up to 10 domains) and both support unlimited traffic. With its free version you can analyze up to two websites and see which update impacted your website. It also shows if it was a positive or negative impact. Fruition’s Tool also lists all Google algorithm updates with their description and the date of release.

The size of the bubbles indicate the possibility or prospects of the impacts of Google updates on your website. It may range from 0-100% but usually the high end is rare. However, if it ever shows 100% then it is an indicator that the sudden change in traffic isn’t random and is related in some way to a particular Google update.

If you’re not sure about how to read the graph then check out their usage guide.

Conclusion

Wait, all the above tools can also be used to tweak your website. For example, if a particular update has impacted your traffic positively then you can consider some optimization to take advantage of that update.

Also, I’m not sure about how often they update their tools to reflect the latest updates by Google but they are the best tools to analyse your historical data. I assume that it’s not real-time so it’s a good idea to track Google Algorithm Change History by Moz as they update the page whenever there’s a major Google algorithmic update.

I also recommend subscribing to Google PageRank & Algorithm Updates by Barry Schwartz as he monitors various Webmaster Forums and Blogs to track all the updates by Google.

So, how do you track various Algorithmic Updates by Google?
